Interview with Ko Soo: Doing WISFC was not hard at all (Part 1)

In WISFC which is currently being broadcast in KNTV, Ko Soo captures the hearts of audiences as Cha Kang Jin. WISFC is a sad love story about first love and destiny. Ko Soo is in Japan for the "KNTV Premium 2010 - Spring Christmas Party". He appears cheerful at the event and his appearance is quite different from the lonely man with the melancholy eyes that is Cha Kang Jin. We see the real face of Ko Soo at the event.

Q: What’s the reason for choosing to do WISFC?

KS: I’d rather be selected than selecting the work myself. I have read and enjoyed the work of writer Lee Kyung Hee. So I was very happy when I received the proposal to work with writer Lee.

Q: Did you have a hard time doing the drama after being away for so long?

KS: Not hard at all (laughs).

Q: Wasn’t it painful at all?

KS: It was not. It was fun.

Q: So, what was interesting?

KS: A movie and a drama have a different sentiment on site after a long time and … A play gives a different kind of pleasure too. The location was fun. I returned again after 4 or 5 years separately from another location and the site was gradually becoming fascinating. There were a lot of snow during the cold winter shoot and it was also a serious situation because Kang Jin was never a simple character. But anyway, it was fun!

Q: On the role of Kang Jin, there seems to be a lot of frustration over the inability of Kang Jin to express love. What do you think about it?

KS: "Simply not keeping one 's love for himself … It's because of many reasons. The reason that he wasn 't supposed to love Ji Wan went well with Kang Jin. And the death of Ji Wan’s elder brother… was well-founded. So you understand?

Q: How about the expression of love?

KS: Kang Jin was thinking it was possible to sacrifice himself in order to protect the love of others, wasn 't it? He was unable to express his feelings of love for Ji Wan and for his mother. His own love became a comfort. In order to feel Ji Wan close by, he welcomed Ji Wan ' s mother. It was painful not being able to express love to a loved one. That was frustrating.

Q: You lived with the mother of Ji Wan in the second half of the drama. Why was that so?

KS: In the first scene on the way to Sanchong, Kang Jin’s mother broke a banner. The arrival of Kang Jin and family to Sanchong was the start of Ji Wan’s misfortune and the origin of the destiny for both families. Kang Jin had this guilt all along that it was his fault. He loved Ji Wan very much and wanted to be around but he was pained by the thought that Ji Wan’s brother died because of his pendant…

It was difficult for Ji Wan to desert Kang Jin and he was not able to express his love for a long time. When Ji Wan’s mother mistook Kang Jin for her son, you couldn’t pretend ignorance. You wanted to be there and be able to see Ji Wan near, right? If one doesn’t meet Ji Wan’s mother, it isn’t possible to see Ji Wan any more. So Kang Jin did that and he felt pain.

It was unexpected to see Ko Soo talking about the Kang Jin theory so eloquently and with a unique and objective analysis. He spoke with depth and with a lot of feelings. He was more like a commentator than an actor.

Interview with Ko Soo: The appeal of Kang Jin - he opens his heart by love and changes gradually (Part 2)

Q: Where you do think lies the charm of Kang Jin?

KS: [Ko Soo pondered over the question for a minute] The appeal of Kang Jin is … He is a person who is not generous to himself in the early stage. There is also a competitive spirit. He tries to protect his love and often devotes himself to his family. He is a strong person with a sense of responsibility. He was wounded in the early days and later found it possible to open his heart for the love of a woman. I think his appeal is the process in which he gradually changed.

Q: Is there a scene in the drama which you would like to recommend, especially to fans?

KS: Winter is a season with very nice scenery, isn'’t it? The scenery in the country is wonderful and there is a unique atmosphere in the country. The scene where Ji Wan met Kang Jin again… They had a love like fire but they were unable to express their feelings for each other. And the part where they expressed their mutual love for each other for the first time.

Also, the scene in front of the café where Kang Jin asked Ji Wan if she knew him; the confession scene; the unpleasant scene with the disagreeable fellow Tae Jun; declaring war again etc. There are a lot if you think about it. The dating scene with Ji Wan was also good.

Q: Is the wonderful Mr Ko Soo vulnerable?

KS: I have a lot of weaknesses. It doesn't show because it is not possible to do it well. Though that may sometimes be good. Do you listen to a person's opinion carefully?

Q: Would you listen if you were told to do it this way by a person even if that is your opinion?

KS: I listen to the words of others though sometimes it is not easy to pay attention. I cheat occasionally (laughs).

Q: What's your next scheduled work?

KS: I will start shooting PSYCHIC with Kang Dong Won in May. The movie will be released later this year.

This is Ko Soo's third official visit to Japan, though he often comes to Japan on his own. “I often visit Tokyo and the vicinity. I like to stroll along the neat and fashionable streets and I love the food of Japan - Sushi, ramen…” (laughs). “I also went to Sendai, Aomori and the rural areas”, revealed Ko Soo like an expert on Japan.

PSYCHIC will be director Kim Min Seok's debut commercial movie. It is a suspense comedy about a man who has psychic power played by Kang Dong Won. Ko Soo and Kang Dong Won will be rivals. The clashing of the two handsome actors and heartthrobs on the big screen will be exciting.

The KNTV Premium 2010 - Christmas Party will be broadcast exclusively in Japan on June 16th from 7.45 pm. Also, WISFC is broadcast on KNTV on every Saturday and Sunday at 11 pm.
