My Mysterious Two 
Q: How was the shooting today? Was it difficult?
KS: After the film ended, I was nervous when I met Son Ye Jin for the photoshoot.
Q: You said you were nervous during the shoot.. You didn’t speak a single word? (laughs)
KS: The concept of shooting “BAEK YA HAENG” was to portray a Yohan who is silent. This was in the storyboard and it was easy to focus on it. But did it come out really dark? Actually I am a cheerful person.
Q: Why do you only do movies that are dark? “SOME” is so, and so is “BAEK YA HAENG”. It seems that you prefer to do the much heavier movies…
KS: Well, there was never an intention like that. It is a natural process. I’m interested in characters that are placed in their different environments. I am fascinated by characters who live a life that I cannot experience. Actually I am energetic and cheerful by nature.
Q: I seem to react strongly to the word “dark” (laughs). What kind of scenario would you say is dark?
KS: I didn’t know there was an original version. Really … (laughs). It was merely interesting. It was a little difficult to read. So I read it again. I read it 3 times successively.
Q: Did you have the same difficulty with “SOME” and how many times did you read it?
KS: I had the same difficulty with “SOME” and “BAEK YA HAENG”. When I lost track of what I was reading, I would go back to the previous page and read it over again. In the latest work, there was a scene which involved a third party which was rather complicated.
Q: If the actors think that the script is difficult, do you think the audience will understand it?
KS: Hmm… A difficult situation can be easily expressed with an image. So we don’t worry about it. A sharp person should be able to understand it rightaway, I think. (laughs)
Q: You will watch it twice if you can’t understand?
KS: Yes, it is good. If you can’t understand, you can watch it 2, 3 times.
Q: When Son Ye Jin was interviewed, she was asked about the bed scene. I want to ask you about the bed scene too. Was this your first bed scene?
KS: Yes, it was the first time. But I wasn't so particular. I have finished becoming a person called Yohan during the shooting. Then a thought and the life of Yohan seemed to immerse naturally. I didn't give the bed scene itself a meaning and I wasn't particular because I paid attention to an action of Yohan. It was a necessary scene to explain a character called Yohan who lived in the darkness. He will do anything to protect Miho, the woman he loves.
I ran into difficulties in playing a character like Yohan from the beginning. The supervision was the same, too. Art is like cutting the arms and leg of an actor. Yohan has very few lines but I heard that in the Japanese drama, the feelings of the chief character were expressed by narration. However, that wasn't the case with this work. It was tough to make emotional display all the time. So an intense bed scene would best describe the feelings of an extreme character like Yohan.
Q: How did you play Yohan? You can’t just put on a cool expression like in a photograph… (laughs)
KS: (Laughs). Exactly. It does not mean that I do not have many friends like Yohan. I know there is talk that I do not speak or drink with friends in the entertainment industry (laughs). The audience can sympathize with such a character more. In normal movies, characters usually make eye contact with each other. But this work is different. I have never done this before.
Q: So the bed scene was necessary. I have not seen the movie yet but I saw the upper body of Ko Soo in the trailer. It was sexy.
KS: (Laughs). Unless you look at the contents, don’t you think? The contents…
Q: Did you train for the scene? This is our first meeting after your discharge from military service. I’m a little surprised when I meet you today. I think you are too thin. I thought perhaps you dieted for the bed scene?
KS: I didn’t diet but tried the training that I always did. It’s my favourite exercise. But until now, I have been primarily doing the weight training. I seem to have slimmed down when I reduced weight training.
Q: I heard that you live a healthy lifestyle, exercising each morning at 6 am?
KS: The best part about the army is that you have a regular life. I had a regular life for 2 years, waking up at 6 am. There’s a lot you can do if you get up early. How comfortable it is to exercise while breathing in the air which is fresh with little vehicular and pedestrian traffic…
Q: What happened to the youth (Ko Soo) who took the cool health drink when he made his debut? (laughs)
KS: I think life as an actor is very irregular. There are moments when nights and days are reversed. Therefore I was very happy to have a regular life in the army.
Q: Indeed. I heard that whilst in the army, Ko Soo became an enthusiast of girl groups?
KS: It was different. I was a soldier who could commute and there was no television in the house for 2 years.
Q: (Laughs). This is full of endless surprises. All of you will be seeing a Ko Soo who will now be devoting himself to a performance career of 16 years.
KS: Is that strange? I think it is very good.
Q: Are the mountains close to your military service?
KS: I was in Seoul (laughs). And the abolition of TV was not on purpose. All too soon, it became so without me realizing it. When it did, I had a lot of time which I spent either reading a book or taking a walk.
Q: To me, Ko Soo looks like he is taking pains to learn and rejuvenate…
KS: It is difficult to live such a life if there isn't time. It isn't bad to live such a life (laughs). I actually got a book from an acquaintance at that time - “The Book of verse” from Lee Seung-bok, the poet. Thoughts seem to have increased when I read it. My thoughts and attitude towards life have changed while looking back to the time that I spent being busy. Thus I looked for the place that I left in “The Book of Verse” after having been discharged from military service and travelling alone. If you think about it, it seems that he always helped me make time now.
