Survival instinct in the battlefield
Actor Ko Soo’s 140 billion blockbuster movie GOJIJEON will be released on 20th July.
Though he expressed regret over an accident that occurred during an explosion scene, he is happy to fulfill his dream of acting in a war epic for the first time. “Kim Soo Hyuk is the most manly role I have done so far”, said Ko Soo.
GOJIJEON is about the 6.25 war between North and South Korea to secure a strip of land while truce negotiations were in progress. After the movie’s preview, the consensus of film critics were that GOJIJEON is a well made movie with a strong assimilation of story and characters.
The role of Lieutenant Kim Soo Hyuk has enabled Ko Soo to transform from a usually shy image (Psychic, White Night etc) to a tough military personnel. I met up with Ko Soo at a café in Seoul on 12th July.
Ko Soo: When I first read the script, it had an impact on me. I kept wondering if this is true? I read all the pages in no time. The situation looked real and I kept asking why do we fight all the time? I wanted to do the 6.25 war film because as a Korean it is imperative to experience war. Government troops defend our motherland for democracy and soldiers have to kill in order to survive. Even when a young soldier is killed by enemy fire, it is being disregarded because that’s the way other soldiers can live.
Ko Soo: Soo Hyuk is a person who understands the process of war. He is cruel but he has the basic instinct to survive. He is a leader who leads his squadron in this war. After 10 takes I still couldn’t understand how to capture Soo Hyuk’s expression. I finally nailed it through trial and error.
Ko Soo interacted with fellow actors on the set every day. For a normal shoot, the people he needs to interact with would be around 10 generally. But for this movie, it’s 100 people! The main cast itself totals about 20 including Shin Ha Kyun, Kim Ok Bin, Ryo Seung Soo, Ko Chang Seok etc.
Ko Soo: There was an accident during an explosion scene. A stuntman injured his face. Fortunately, there were no big accidents but many actors sprained their feet as they had to run around bends. We had to shoot a scene where soldiers were locked up on a ship in the winter rain. And it was of course inconvenient going to the toilet in military uniform. Filming stretched from September to April. The location site was on fire twice and it became a ruin. There were also a lot of trees. It was like a maze and the crew had to mark out the places in order not to get lost.
The writer is convinced that Ko Soo’s hard work has paid off. Female audiences were seen shedding a lot of tears during the preview of GOJIJEON. The story is powerful and the scenes are impactful.
