Han Hyo Joo says Go Soo is chameleon in acting
by Korea Star Daily
It is really hard for one to accept the straight face personality of Go Mi Soo in the film 'Love 911'. She is an detestable doctor who never considers the situation of the other party, and says whatever she wants. But this careless and vicious tongued character is actually played by the ladylike Han Hyo Joo.
'Love 911' has completely destroyed the elegant ladylike image that Han Hyo Joo is made out to be in her previous works like 'Iljimae', 'Dong Yi', and 'Masquerade'. I had the honor of interviewing her recently, and the Han Hyo Joo sitting in front of me, is someone that has a bubbly and adorable image. You can hardly find any traces of Go Mi Soo from her, and makes me wonder how did she portray a character that is totally the opposite of her true self.
"'Love 911' was recommended to me by my agency's CEO. He said many actresses wanted to star in it, and after reading the script, I realize that it was indeed a character that was worth clamoring for. The character had a strong personality and was really charismatic, so I decided to take the offer. Frankly speaking, she appears to be even stronger in the script. I tried hard to make the character appear detestable but not to the point of hating on it. It was a refreshing feeling to me, and was something that I had never tried before, so I was really excited over it. Furthermore, the character allowed me to say whatever I wanted, so it was really interesting during filming. Some of my scenes were done away with during filming, so it was rather regrettable, and I wished I had more scenes."
Han Hyo Joo revealed that her character was a doctor right from the beginning, so she specially learnt special resuscitation techniques and some basic treatment methods. In the end, she even got a certificate for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). She expressed, "I had to act as a doctor, so I tried stuff like stitching, and doing surgery to get a feel. I even specially took lessons for CPR and got myself a certificate. Although there isn't much scenes of me as a doctor, but I was a doctor after all so there was a lot of medical terms that I had to know. I downloaded an application pertaining to all those medical terms, and often read it to brush up on my knowledge. But I don't understand most of them, so doctors are really admirable to me."
Go Mi Soo would burst out in a slew of expletives when things don't go her way in the film. And scenes where Go Mi Soo just goes ballistic with expletives might leave viewers feeling repulsive. Thus, Han Hyo Joo would try to tone down in secret in order to not make Go Mi Soo feel detestable to viewers. She said, "I felt really good when I shouted expletives the first time, and I wanted to go on further, but I was scared that it might make viewers feel detestable if I go overboard. So I would tone down a little secretly, but the director would tell me, 'You could actually be even fiercer.'"
Han Hyo Joo has worked with slightly older actors like Lee Byung Hun, Ji Jin Hee, So Ji Sub, and others in her past works. So does she feel any pressure working opposite her seniors who are older than her and has bags of experience? She said, "On the contrary, they take rather good care of me because of their age. Men who are older aren't irritating and are really understanding, haha. I got a lot of care from them, and they never made me feel uncomfortable around them, it was easy to get along with them as they treat me like their own sister, I must be really blessed."
The chemistry shown between Han Hyo Joo and Go Soo enables viewers to immerse themselves fully into the film. That is because she trusts and relies on him, resulting in a certain chemistry blooming between them both. She added, "Go Soo is a person who leaves you expecting something, and is a chameleon in acting. If I throw a ball at him, although you can anticipate the way he would be catching, so I would often throw the ball in many different directions. The director likes this about Go Soo, because he is interesting, and has a ability to make things happen differently."
