First teaser and character posters for Empire of Gold

Ooh I like these posters. Between Empire of Gold and Sword and Flower, I’m starting to have some faith in drama poster people again. It might just be a good summer yet. Empire’s latest character posters are simple, just featuring the three leads — Go Soo, Lee Yo-won, and Sohn Hyun-joo — but the moody lighting sells it. And okay, Go Soo isn’t bad either.
The teaser isn’t really living up the epic tone I was waiting for, but it does start out with a nice voiceover from Sohn Hyun-joo: “April. It’s cruel. Spring comes. Flowers bloom. Buildings go up. When a new city gets built, the wasteland disappears.” I suppose when you put it that way, a story about real estate tycoons doesn’t sound as dry as it does on paper.

The rest of the teaser is take-it-or-leave-it boardroom hysterics, which doesn’t come across as very enticing to me. Hopefully there will be a strong setup at the outset of this story to make me care about the people. The building of modern-day Seoul is a potentially rich dramatic backdrop… as long as we actually get to leave the boardroom to see it happen.

The drama will follow Go Soo and Sohn Hyun-joo’s twenty-year war to rise to the top of a chaebol conglomerate, with Lee Yo-won caught in the middle between her love for Go Soo, the man who came from nothing but wants to tear her family down, and loyalty to oppa Sohn Hyun-joo. Sohn’s dark turn as the villain should be a performance worth watching for, and it looks like Go Soo will go toe-to-toe with him for revenge, ambition, and maybe even just plain greed. Who ever said the hero had to be a good guy?

Empire of Gold follows Jang Ok-jung and premieres July 1 on SBS.
