Ko Soo: “80% of My Pain is From Love"

4 years is neither a long nor a short period.

However, for actors who tend to be easily forsaken, this period of time seems like a billion years. Nevertheless, he is back now in the cold winter days and capturing female hearts with his intense and mesmerizing eyes. Can he then be considered a lucky guy?

Ko Soo is back. Through his portrayal in “White Night”, Ko Soo has attracted the attention of audiences. Whether be it a romantic or tough image, both exude endless charm, drawing the attention of audiences.

In “Will It Snow for Christmas”, Ko Soo plays the role of Kang Jin who appears to be a perfect guy but is actually suffering from pain. His heartrending love story with Han Ye Seul (who plays Ji Wan) will warm the hearts of audiences in the cold winter nights.

I met Ko Soo on the afternoon of January 7th, with traces of the blizzard which had earlier descended upon Seoul.

Q: This is your first drama 4 years after “Marrying a Millionaire”?

KS: Initially a little tired as we have a tight shooting schedule. But now it’s OK. The script is different from other drama series as it is completed at a very fast pace. So there is no conflict in schedule. Director Choe Mun Seok has insisted that we view the first cut, so we have to pay close attention to the shooting schedule (laughs).

Q: Was your role in the movie “White Night” of help in doing this drama?

KS: With “White Night”, you can look at the on-site monitor. But, as you know, you cannot do that all the time with a TV drama. So we have to go to the editor’s room to view. To tell the truth, I’m rather anxious as this is my comeback TV project. I’m very concerned about my acting skills. Before, I did not attach as much importance. Now it seems to be helpful when doing TV dramas.

Q: Do you have any difficulties portraying Kang Jin?

KS: As there were a lot of emotional scenes in the first half of the drama, I had a little difficulty at first. The emotional reunion of the grown up Kang Jin and Ji Wan and the situation in which they cannot love each other are somewhat difficult. We (director and crew) will talk about this on the set when shooting for each episode finishes. But isn’t this the joy of acting in a melodrama? Though it is not a romantic comedy, but all these emotions of whether to love or not to love are truly a pleasure to play. The first half was difficult at first, but it is now easier.

Q: Though it is a difficult part to play, but Kang Jin wins the heart of female audiences.

KS: That’s right … Although in reality it’s tiring to be someone like Kang Jin. But to me, he is a very attractive guy. TV does provide the audience with a hypothetical platform. It will be good and I hope people will still remember Kang Jin after the drama ends.

Q: What’s the real Ko Soo like?

KS: I learned a lot from being Kang Jin, regardless of whether it’s career or love, as well as his love for his parents. Up to now, I have been learning a lot from the role. There is also a difference between me and Kang Jin.

Q: Kang Jin’s love intensifies because of Ko Soo’s expressive eyes. Have you in reality experienced similar kind of painful love with Ji Wan?

KS: Characters exist in the script and how to present these characters are the duties of the actors. I have only done my part of the job as an actor.

Q: Would you like to talk about your love life?

KS: Love is a good thing. Although it will bring pain, but it can also turn into medicine. 80% of my pain is from love. This does not derive from my love experiences but a combination of several love experiences and my thoughts.

Q: Were you hurt many times?

KS: Maybe 3, 4 times? At that time, love for me was a bit extreme. Even though with different people, it was equally painful. When in love, I will make every effort to do my best. But when I’m on a job, I’m not able to do so. I think I will want to fall in love this year.

Q: Looks like you didn’t suffer a lot of pain. Have you thought about marriage?

KS: It seems to me that, for a person alone to perceive, to experience, to learn, there is a limit one can do. One person's view towards things seems to be short-sighted. Perhaps it will be the same with a family later. However, I still have a lot to do. So I will consider my career first.

Q: What’s your ideal type?

KS: In the past, I’m more concerned with external beauty. But now, I care more about inner beauty. Someone who is kind of heart and dedicated to her work is very beautiful and sexy to me.

Q: You have been very lucky to have worked with Son Ye Jin in “White Night” and Han Ye Seul in “Will It Snow for Christmas” for your comeback.

KS: Many boys are envious. I’m sure they think that I’m a lucky guy. And that there must have been something ambiguous between Son Ye Jin and me. Miss Ye Jin is not only beautiful but also a great actress. Miss Han Ye Seul is a good person, passionate in her performances and good in character. Working with them has made me realize the reason why they are desirable to men. I am happy and thankful to have worked with them.

Q: How do find Ji Wan and Woo Jung in WISFC?

KS: In reality, Sun Woo Sun sis is great. About Woo Jung… Actually I prefer the Ji Wan-type more.

Q: What will happen to Kang Jin and Ji Wan?

KS: Although I don’t yet know the outcome, but if it’s a melodrama, then it will be more process-oriented I think. Even though their love is tough, but there is happiness in their midst.

Q: How does writer Lee Kyung Hee or Director Choe Mun Seok assess the part of Kang Jin?

KS: Director Choe works non-stop from beginning to end. And, of course, not acting against instructions. I feel that he treats the production like a stage play. As long as the actors are doing their part, he’s OK with it. Director Choe will say "good” after each CUT. Writer Lee always encourages me and never stingy with her praise.

Q: “Chuno” is making its debut as a strong competitor.

KS: I wasn’t able to see “Chuno” yesterday as I was watching WISFC. The genres are different and the audience’s viewing preferences are also different. We are all striving to do a good job. (The reporter mentioned that because of “Chuno”, the ratings for WISFC has slipped). I believe audiences will return to see our drama (laughs).

Q: What’s your own evaluation of this drama?

KS: The work has not finished. Compared to the past, my passion for acting will be more intense now. I want to take on more acting jobs to build up my strength.

Q: What does Ko Soo the actor perceive as the next step for “actor Ko Soo”?

KS: I think an ‘actor” is very idealized – so much so that it is difficult to become that “actor”. I want to be an actor who is still a favourite 40 or 50 years down the road. I have seen recent reports that there are not much changes to the evaluations of the 70’s and 80’s. An actor's life is also the same as before with little change. The so-called 'actor limitation'… I entered this circle, living my life every day, not knowing whether I can become like my famous predecessors.

Today, for Ko Soo the actor, everything seems to start from scratch.

KS : มีซีนอารมณ์ เยอะมากๆ ในช่วยแรกของละคร ผมรู้สึกว่ามันยากนิดหน่อยตอนแรก
อารมณ์ของจีวานกับคังจิน
ตอนโตที่ได้มาพบกันอีกครั้งแต่สถานการณ์ทำให้รักกันไม่ได้นี้ยากครับ เรา (ผู้กำกับและทีมงาน) จะมานั่งคุยกันเรื่องนี้ หลังจากถ่ายจบทุกๆ ตอน แต่มันสนุกนะครับที่เล่นละครชีวิต แม้ว่าจะไม่ใช่รักตลกโรแมนติด แต่ทุกอารมณ์ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นอารมณ์รัก หรือไม่รัก ผมมีความสุขที่จะเล่น ช่วงครึ่งแรกยากครับ แต่ตอนนี้ง่ายขึ้น

Q : ถึงจะเล่นยาก แต่คังจินก็ชนะหัวใจคนดูสาวๆ

KS : ถูกต้องครับ แม้ว่าในความเป็นจริง คงจะเหนื่อยมากที่จะเป็นคนแบบคังจิน แต่สำหรับผม เขาเป็นผู้ชายที่ดึงดูดใจมากๆ ละครทำให้คนดูเห็นเหตุผลพื้นฐาน มันคงจะดีถ้าคนดูจะยังคงจดจำคังจินตลอดไปแม้ว่าละครจะอวสานไป

Q : แล้ว ตัวจริงของโกซู เหมือนอะไร ?

KS : ผมได้เรียนรู้อะไรหลายอย่างจากการแสดงเป็นคังจิน ไม่ว่าทั้งอาชีพ และความรัก ความรักต่อพ่อแม่ด้วย มาถึงวันนี้
ผมเรียนรู้จากบทมาก แต่ยังมีความแตกต่างระหว่างตัวผม กับคังจินอยู่ดีครับ

Q : ความรักของคังจินรุนแรงและเข้มข้น เพราะสายตาของโกซู ที่แสดงออกมาได้แนบเนียน คุณมีประสพการณ์จริง ที่เจ็บปวดจากรักหรือเปล่า?

KS : เป็นหน้าที่ของนักแสดงครับที่จะต้องเข้าถึงบทบาท และนำเสนอให้สมจริง ผมทำไปเพราะเป็นงาน
ในฐานะนักแสดงคนหนึ่งน่ะครับ

Q : คุณอยากพูดถึงชิวิตรักของตัวเองไหม ?

KS อาจจะ 3 หรือ 4 ครั้ง เวลานั้น ความรักสำหรับผมแล้วเป็นสิ่งที่สุดยอด ถึงแม้จะต่างคน แต่ความเจ็บปวดนั้นเท่ากันครับ เมื่อมีความรักผมจะพยายามทำอย่างดีที่สุด แต่พอต้องทำงาน ผมทำแบบนั้นไม่ได้ ผมคิดว่า ผมจะมีความรักปีนี้แหละครับ

Q : ดูเหมือนว่าคุณไม่ได้ทุข์ทรมาณเท่าไหร่นี่ คุณคิดเรื่องแต่งงานบ้างไหม ?

KS : ดูเหมือนว่าผม เป็นคนโสดที่ยอบรับที่จะ มีประสพการณ์ คนเดียว เรียนรู้ชิวิตเพียงลำพัง แต่มันมีข้อจำกัดนะครับ การมองอะไร ด้วยสายตาของคนคนเดียวอาจจะไม่ยาวพอ บางที่ครอบครัวจะดีกว่า แต่ผมยังมีอะไรที่จะต้องทำอีกมาก ดังนั้นตอนนี้ผมขอสนใจเรื่องงานก่อน

Q : ผู้หญิงแบบไหนที่คุณชอบ ?

KS : เมื่อก่อนผมสนใจรูปลักษณ์ภายนอกมากกว่า แต่ตอนนี้ผมสนใจความงามจากข้างในครับ
ใครสักคนที่มีจิตใจดี และทุ่มเทกับงานของเธอ นี่แหละครับจะสวย เซ็กซี่มาก สำหรับผม

Q : คุณโชคดีที่ได้ทำงานกับ ซอนเยจิน ในหนัง White Night และ ฮันเยซึล ในละคร WISFC

KS : ผู้ชายหลายคนอิจฉาผม ผมแน่ใจว่าเขาคิดว่าผมเป็นผู้ชายที่โชคดี และจะต้องมีบางสิ่งที่น่าสงสัย

KS : ผมยังไม่ทราบ แต่ถ้านี่เป็นละครชิวิต ผมคิดว่าคงจะมี แม้ว่ารักของทั้งคู่จะมีอุปสรรค

Q : คุณประเมินละครเรื่องนี้ ตามความเห็นของคุณอย่างไร ?

KS : ละครยังไม่จบ เปรียบเทียบกับในอดีต การแสดงของผมเข้มข้นกว่าเมื่อก่อน ผมต้องการที่จะแสดง
