Tipsy talk (1) Ko Soo,

a good man who can speak bad language

What was Director Jang Hun’s reason for casting handsome actor Ko Soo in GOJIJEON? His reply was he wanted to ‘break’ Ko Soo and drive this pretty-boy actor to the limit by giving him a challenging role which would draw out his versatility as an actor. This reporter has the same plan too to ‘break’ Ko Soo at any cost today. We have prepared a tipsy talk session with Ko Soo to draw him out as he is an actor who is the most difficult to interview. He doesn’t answer the questions nor would he attempt to hide. Reporters are often irritated by his peculiarly easy going attitude. His answers are either too short or flat.

The disgusting rainy season has ended and I met Ko Soo on a clear day at a Korean restaurant in Seoul . Traditional liquor was served with marinated Thornback.

Climbing enthusiast

An interview with Ko Soo often starts with sports. He likes to work out in a nearby gym. This reporter who is worried about his tummy listens to Ko Soo talk about a healthy lifestyle.

Q: It’s been a long time after PSYCHIC, isn’t it?

Ko Soo also clearly remembers our first interview. It was a Sunday. I rode a bicycle to the interview venue and entered the interview room with my helmet. Ko Soo stood up and looked at me with his big eyes. The memory of our first encounter was intense.

Ko Soo: It was around October last year. 9 months have passed, haven’t they?

Q: Did you do any climbing (rock climbing, mountain climbing) after that?

Ko Soo is into extreme sports and is a climbing enthusiast.

Ko Soo: Hardly done any after that time. Then I started shooting GOJIJEON. Seems like I will have to begin again soon.

Q: Heard that you have set up a small climbing place in your home?

Ko Soo: I don’t understand?

Well, Ko Chang Seok who appeared with Ko Soo in GOJIJEON whispered this to me in secret. He also said that Ko Soo is a really good friend. I have not forgotten Ko Chang Seok’s words of praise for Ko Soo.

Ko Soo: I see… I made a climbing place from a wall in the house around April this year. It isn’t big. I think it’s more for hanging down rather than climbing up (laughs).

Climbing to the top requires physical strength and technique. But hanging down is even more difficult. Ko Soo seems to have a high level of competency in mountain climbing.

Q: I’d like to learn too.

Ko Soo: It is a good sport. Please be sure to try it. You can build up body muscles and it is a good way to lose excessive weight too.

A morning type of person who gets up at 7.30 am.

He seems to be a sports enthusiast really.

Ko Soo: Yes, I like sports to the extent that I can’t stand it if I do not exercise. I feel refreshed after exercising.

Q: When do you get up in the morning?

Ko Soo: I usually get up early – around 7.30 am or 8 o’clock. It’s really good to get up early in the morning.

Q: You sleep early at night too?

Ko Soo: Not early at all. I become a bit sleepy at around 10 o’clock. I will lie in bed and will only fall asleep around 12 o’clock.

Q: You are a person who lives a healthy lifestyle by going to bed early and getting up early, right?

Ko Soo: (Laughs). Hmm… I am the sort who likes to work out regularly and lives vigorously. When I’m unable to work out, I get worried - like there’s something to be done but left undone... I will have to watch this carefully.

Q: Meals?

Ko Soo: I eat 3 meals a day. Breakfast is simple. Lunch and dinner are heavy. But as far as possible, it’s vegetarian. I think there’s an interest to take more vegetables than meat these days.

Q: You will cook and eat by yourself?

Ko Soo: I live with my mom. She often prepares my meals.

Is a healthy image stressful? A possible solution is marathon!

When living a healthy lifestyle, stress also seems to build up

Ko Soo: I don’t know whether I’m doing it right, but I feel relaxed.

Q: How do you relieve stress?

Ko Soo: Nothing substantial, but sometimes I do get angry. If stress builds up, I will work out (exercise) to get rid of it.

Q: What if it is not possible to get rid of true anger?

Ko Soo: Yes, there was once. When I am worried or troubled, I will take a run – like I’m running away from my troubles. There was once I ran from my home to the area around the Han River . After a while, I realised that I had run 35 km. It seemed like I had run a marathon (laughs).

There is also the really absurd face.

Isn’t there also the nickname of “Four-dimensional actor”?

Ko Soo: I don’t think I am absurd… (laughs).

This tipsy talk session has met with an obstacle from the beginning. We went through a lot of difficulty to fix a date, but of all things, there is also a stage greeting on the same day. So it is likely that the tipsy talk session is accepted for the sake of promotion. But time is time. We are also worried about the sincerity of his words if the stage greeting is held after the tipsy talk session. Meanwhile, Ko Soo’s face has turned red as a carrot after tossing off traditional liquor successively.

Q: How much can you drink?

Ko Soo: If it’s soju, it’s a little less than one. When drinking liquor, my face becomes red. The people around are getting worried.

Q: Will you be OK for the stage greeting today?

Ko Soo: Even so, the tipsy talk session shouldn’t be done haphazardly. I will do it properly and leave with an ease of mind (laughs).

Q: Did liquor cause you any trouble?

Ko Soo: Well, I don’t really avoid liquor. But sometimes it’ll just be a case of using the wrong words, so I have to be careful.

I have seen Ko Soo got drunk once. Female fans find his habit of embracing as an indication of closeness interesting.

Q: Is speaking so slowly your natural way of talking?

Ko Soo: This… I’m… a bit slow (laughs).

Q: Have you ever used bad language?

Ko Soo: Said XX. It’s like this.

It was awkward. If it is a problem seeing him as a bad person, it is also a problem hearing him speak bad language.

Tipsy talk (2): Ko Soo getting married to girlfriend?

He simply laughed

Getting married to girlfriend? He laughs.

The one thing people want to know most is his girlfriend. Recently Ko Soo admitted coolly that he is dating a college student who is 11 years younger. Netizens immediately dug up information about the girlfriend and disclosed her name, university etc. Ko Soo was rather upset initially.

Q: I know it is uncomfortable for you, but it’s inevitable. We want to hear about your girlfriend.

Ko Soo: We often meet (laughs).

It was a careful reply. But his eyes told me that he had to be more careful with his words. I decided to press the point and asked him about his marriage plans.

Still too early to talk about marriage

Ko Soo: …. (laughs).

Ko Soo answered my question with a laugh. His eyes seemed to say “be a little more careful”. In a previous interview, Ko Soo had said his ideal type would be a woman who can lead. It is apparent that though the girlfriend is young, she is able to lead him.

Man with chiseled good looks? It seems like it’s 50-50.

Q: Do you know about your nickname of Ko-vid (Ko Soo + David)?

Ko Soo: Yes, it is embarrassing.

Q: Personally, do you think you are handsome?

Ko Soo: Looks like half-half (laughs).

Q: Are there any songs that you like lately?

At this time, the restaurant was playing “Moonlight Starlight”, a lively song from a girls group.

Ko Soo: I like music. Actually I don’t quite like the songs these days. Oh, there’s a sound track I like very much. It’s “…….. song festival”.

GOJIJEON: Feeling of crossing a big mountain

Questions are now turning away from good guy Ko Soo to the opposite.

Ko Soo: By the way, Mr Reporter, why aren’t you asking me questions about my work?

GOJIJEON is Ko Soo’s 4th movie (opened on July 20th) in which he portrays Kim Soo Hyuk, a lieutenant with a tormented soul because of the war. First he was a timid student who entered military service. However, all too soon, he became an incarnation of war. It is an entirely different role from Gyu Nam in PSYCHIC.

Q: What’s the primary focus point in your portrayal of Soo Hyuk?

Ko Soo: The whole tone is important. I kill people. So I have to show cruelty. It isn’t a simple villain role. Director Jang Hun seems to have the same idea.

Q: Weren’t you concerned about the size of your role?

Ko Soo: I totally feel that every actor is playing the main character in GOJIJEON. In that respect, I did my best for the role of Lieutenant Kim Soo Huyk.

Q: What’s in Ko Soo’s heart when viewing GOJIJEON?

Ko Soo: Filming was tough going up and down the highlands. If this can be communicated to fans, it will give me a feeling that I have crossed a big mountain personally. It will also give me the power to face new challenges in the future.

Ko Soo did a stage greeting at a theatre in Seoul as scheduled after the tipsy talk session today. His face was red and the staff concerned were much worried. However, according to the people who attended, Ko Soo was livelier and wittier than usual.

How does Director Jang Hun see Ko Soo?

Ko Soo is one of the actors whose style is to completely absorb himself into the character he plays from start to finish. He seems to be able to assimilate himself to the role perfectly during the entire filming period. He also behaves like Kim Soo Hyuk whether on or off camera. For example, during a lunch break when having a meal in the canteen, he adopted the mannerism of Soo Hyuk. The tense manner was always maintained. And he checks the script carefully everyday. From a simple college student to a war incarnation, his Soo Hyuk expression and gaze were done to perfection.

Tipsy Talk (3): Ko Soo sighs over question paper

[Current affairs quiz] Ko Soo: “It is not possible to give the right answer to Question 5. I’m sorry”.

When the question sheet was handed to Ko Soo, he led out a sigh.

Ko Soo: Please wait a moment. This…. That….

He read and re-read the questions. His expression of considering each question carefully was distinctly shown many times. He poured through the questions. His confused expression would suddenly become bright at the same time.

Ko Soo scratched his head when he came to Question 5. He laughed and apologised for not giving a correct answer.
