[Star Interview] Ko Soo: I want to be back

as soon as possible

Actor Ko Soo (33) has chosen to do a war movie after PSYCHIC. The 6-month filming period was tough as the film location was on a mountain 650 m above sea level.

“Doesn’t every male actor want to do a war movie at least once in his career?” laughs Ko Soo. Consequently, he finds that such a role is suitable for him while shooting the movie. He understands the war better and that is good.

In the film, he portrays Lieutenant Kim Soo Hyuk, a courageous leader of the Alligator Squadron. His tenacity for war turns him into a war machine but despite this, Soo Hyuk was a timid college student 2 years ago.

Ko Soo had to express the 2 different characteristics well, so it was a strain both physically and mentally. “I didn’t know at first it was so serious. There was a bigger reason for Soo Hyuk’s charms. Portraying Soo Hyuk was fascinating work but shooting was really tough and difficult” (laughs).

He remembers running up the slope between the bomb explosions and admits he has confidence in this kind of physical stunt. But filming in the mud was a nightmare which is edged in his memory till this day. During the shooting of one particular scene, he was submerged in mud. There was mud everywhere. His muddy uniform was sticky and stuck to his body. It was not a good feeling at all. When he got up, the crew had to spray water on the top of his uniform to get rid of the mud. This was the only way. Because of this scene, he developed a skin disease and had to go to the hospital.

Another worrying thought for Ko Soo was how to express the change in Soo Hyuk when meeting Eun Pyo again after 2 years, especially the scene where he looked at the corpse and then at Eun Pyo.

“There is no one actor who will be satisfied with one’s own performance”, said Ko Soo. “Viewing a finished product for the first time is when you see only yourself on the screen and you feel like getting your examination paper marked. Seeing the finished product a 2nd time means you are seeing it with an audience’s viewpoint”. Ko Soo reveals frankly that he still feels nervous when his work is being reviewed/evaluated.

For Soo Hyuk to shout angrily at Eun Pyo is unimaginable for the real Ko Soo. That particular scene therefore left a deep impression on him. Was that scene a true reflection of the real Ko Soo? “There is no similarity at all. There is no angry person there. Everyone knows that I don’t get angry”, smiles Ko Soo.

It has been 3 months since shooting for GOJIJEON ended in April. “I’d like to do a lot more work but choosing a good script depends on fate. I am going through some materials for movies as well as TV dramas now. I hope to be able to start work as soon as possible”, says Ko Soo.
