Q: Heard that you were shedding tears at the press preview of GOJIJEON?
Ko Soo: It was a misunderstanding. I didn’t shed tears (laughs). Actually I was nervous about the ‘results’ of the film review. Besides, I saw Kim Ok Bin crying quietly at the side and I suddenly reflected on the time when we filmed the movie. So I welled up a little.
Q: Why did you choose to do GOJIJEON? What’s so fascinating about this movie?
Ko Soo: Frankly, I didn’t plan to do something so serious in the beginning. I like exercising, so I am confident physically. But a war film is not all about physical strength. You don’t get acquainted with the place and weather in just 1 or 2 days. We underwent training, stayed together and endured the tough environment for 6 months (laughs). If the actors are happily spending quality time together, there is no hell on earth.
Q: It appeared that in order to simulate violent battle scenes, many soldiers were injured?
Ko Soo: Indeed, I do have vivid memories of some memorable episodes on the set of GOJIJEON. My elder brother (Shin) Ha Kyun injured his foot, elder brother (Ko) Chang Seok had problem with his lower back and I myself stumbled around in the… There were no big injuries but everyone was injured at least once. However, I had a pain in my heart, really. We, everyone of us, had to run around the battlefield for a year (laughs).
Q: Have you ever regretted doing this movie?
Ko Soo: There was a minor complaint but nothing explosive together as a group. When someone was unhappy, we would say “My elder brother is best as expected”. There were also jokes as well as complaints. But an effort was made to motivate the junior and secondary cast of GOJIJEON. It was an exceptionally warm movie set.
Q: When was the happiest moment at the location site? Was it during meal time?
Ko Soo: The place where male actors gather, you understand? (Laughs). Of course, meal time was also happy. The time when you complete your scenes ahead of other actors was the sweetest (laughs).
Q: Even though it’s only a movie, but not long after completing military service and taking off your uniform in 2008, it is disgusting to put on an uniform again, don’t you think?
Ko Soo: I didn’t have such thought. I read the script of GOJIJEON and to me, Kim Soo Hyuk was a challenging role to play. I started shooting GOJIJEON immediately after PSYCHIC. I tried my best to quickly adapt to the changing environment. Luckily for me, the location site for GOJIJEON was very real. It helped me returned to the era of the Korean war and enabled me to break away from my previous work.
Q: How did Director Jang Hun put Ko Soo in the middle of a war?
Ko Soo: He gave me the script for GOJIJEON and asked me which was the character I like best. Actually playing Kim Soo Hyuk who was on a central mission in GOJIJEON was a big burden. His transformation due to the cruelties of war is very different from what I have done so far. But Director Jang Hun suggested that I take on the role of Soo Hyuk.
Q: Director Jang seemed to have wanted Ko Soo to break away from his clean image through Kim Soo Hyuk. However, did Ko Soo himself agree to the part too?
Ko Soo: I am definitely not a clean living man. I just don’t like to bring harm to others. People may assume that this is a healthy life. A person with the kind of character like me shouldn’t have behaved impolitely to Director Jang when I first met him (laughs). It gives the impression that I wanted to change my popular image through this movie.
Q: The scene in which Soo Hyuk used abusive language on the young kids was shocking because they came from the mouth of Ko Soo who is gentle and has a good image.
Ko Soo: It was really cruel. It is not good for such lines to be delivered in front of child actors. I made a request to Director Jang to film this scene alone. After the children were taken out, I started spewing bad language by myself. As long as audiences could understand and connect the scene to the movie, it will be fine. The bad language is an indication of Kim Soo Hyuk’s abnormal behaviour due to his inability to escape from the hellish reality of war. This has left another scar in his heart.
Q: The child actor was crying very sadly so you can follow-up directly with your lines (laughs)?
Ko Soo: How can a child actor listen to such bad language, no matter what? By the way, the child actors were really good. It was difficult for them as they had to wait at the side a long time for their take. When action instructions were received, they acted spontaneously.
Q: What if you were asked to take on the role of Shin Ha Kyun’s character Lieutenant Eun Pyo which is Ko Soo’s image as it is?
Ko Soo: Such a thought never came to mind. It was enough that I was anxious about Kim Soo Hyuk. If I were to think about it now that I am given this question… I still don’t think so. The task that was given to me was Kim Soo Hyuk and Ko Soo’s Kim Soo Hyuk has just been completed.
It has been 4 months since the completion of GOJIJEON. He seems to be in a ‘rice field’ too much. He is looking for his new film and is particular about his next role.
