Actor Ko Soo (32) is always careful, even with friends as well as fans. He is known to be a quiet, well-behaved youth.

Senior actress Jo Min Soo who co-starred with Ko Soo in 2001’s PIANO recalled that Ko Soo was a pensive person who kept mainly to himself. The first time she saw him, he was dangling from a steel bar by himself on the set of PIANO.

He has now decided that it’s time for a change after 10 years as an actor. With the release of GOJIJEON on 20th July, he has quietly thrown away his gentle image.

In GOJIJEON, he is Kim Soo Hyuk who was a timid young student who later becomes a ‘hero’. As the war progresses, he gradually loses himself to become a different person.

Ko Soo said, “A person may think that who he or she meets has changed. I’m one of them. There are many sides to me. The one side of me that has not surfaced up to now is shown”. About his transformation in the movie, Ko Soo said that it is a good experience, though he may not necessarily find it satisfactory.

 

 

Ko Soo’s character changes 180 degrees from 1st half of the movie to the 2nd half. The ordinary college student who is afraid of the war becomes an unfeeling, cruel war machine.

“I wanted to show another aspect of me”

Ko Soo explained about his transformation, “I concentrated my energy on inner change. I thought it was necessary to change my way of thinking. As my way of thinking changed so did my appearance”.

Ko Soo worried about how to portray Soo Hyuk in the battlefield. No thoughts came to mind and everything was blank. In the end, he tried various methods to express Soo Hyuk.

In order to portray Soo Hyuk’s face expression to perfection, Ko Soo made an effort to devise an ‘original’ expression. He tried twisting his face, moving his ear and even changing his eye expression repeatedly.

“Having performed the ever-changing Soo Hyuk gives me a chance to look back on myself”, said Ko Soo.

“Every person experiences various changes due to situation and environment. I am like that too… I think time will tell what kind of turning point such changes will bring”.

Ko Soo added, “The movie has triggered my determination for a drastic change. A ‘good and kind role’ which has a healing effect fits me and it is pleasant because living isn’t always easy. While acting, my desire to draw out a different aspect of me has strengthened. However, I would like to make sure that the ‘speed of change’ can be controlled by me”.

Ko Soo feels that there some parts where change is needed quickly and there are certain areas where change can be carried out slowly. When he first started acting, there seemed to be a sense of responsibility, so change was resisted. But time has passed and he has become stronger and is able to stand up for himself.

 

 

 

If you fall in love? It is not ‘innocent love’

There will be a change when a man approaches his mid-30s. He will think momentarily of “Who will I support and exist for”.

“When I went mountain climbing one day, I met a man and a woman at a steep slope. The man carried a big backpack from his shoulder to his leg. But the lady who seemed to be his wife was carrying only a small bag. They looked really wonderful”, said Ko Soo.

When asked whether falling in love is a feeling of innocent love, Ko Soo replied, “I don’t think it is so”.

It was reported recently that Ko Soo is dating a college student of fine arts who is 11 years younger. But Ko Soo is very cautious about her privacy. As he is an actor and she is not in the entertainment industry, he is worried that her daily life will be affected.

Ko Soo laughed shly, “I don’t even know what type of “falling in love” I am”.
