Ko Soo – Unwavering love
It is the privilege of the audience to treat the actor himself and the character he is playing as one. What we do not know is that Ko Soo is a truly decent and sincere person or is it because of the roles he plays? Whatever it is, we like his image. True to his love, never betraying his love and never giving in to the obstacles he faces – this is the image of Ko Soo.
Love is a great feeling
Q: Not long ago, in the newly concluded drama WISFC, audiences were disappointed that the love story between the two lead characters were not fully realized.
KS: From the start, this is not a romantic love story but a story which is complex and with many twists and turns. Though it may not be an “ordinary” love story, but I think the way they overcome difficulties and their determination to pursue true love is a display of “great” love. I am proud to be a part of the cast.
Q: You have been doing a lot of movies about tragic love, pure love etc. Do you identify with the pain these characters are going through?
Ko Soo: When given a role, I will try to respect and understand the character I am playing. I will try to feel his emotions in different situations. So it is not really easy. Through WISFC, I realize once again that love is truly a great feeling, not just a moment of passion or a brief warm feeling. Love is beyond all these. It’s all-inclusive and something which lasts much longer.
Q: Do you believe in true love which surpasses all difficulties and obstacles?
KS: I do. But I think it is difficult to encounter such love in our daily life because I have never met anyone like Ji Wan or Kang Jin before.
Q: Do you have a girlfriend now? Are you in love now?
KS: I really don’t know what I’m doing now. How to distinguish between “in love” and “love”? This is a question which generates a lot of thought.
Desire for a dream life
KS: This is not my choice deliberately. I feel that I have a diverse image. But so far, this is the image that people associate me with. If people think this is so, then it must be so. In the past, I used to hide myself through the roles I play as I thought this is the only way I could absorb the character I’m portraying better. But now I realize that no matter what I do, there is no escaping the “set” image of me, which is a just a “shell”.
Q: So who is the real Ko Soo?
KS: I am an optimistic person. I am not too old now, so I still have a long way to go in my acting career. Isn’t that right? I will be honest and sincere in my acting. And I will be true to the character I portray. I feel very calm and at peace.
Q: For an actor, the most important thing to do when you are in your 20’s is to continually gain experience and explore various roles that are suitable for yourself. When you reach your 30’s, you will need to surpass all these to bring your acting skill to a higher level. You should have such thoughts, right?
KS: I have never thought about my image for the future. If offered an interesting script, naturally I will go for it. Maybe I’ll do a comedy. But so far, I have not encountered an interesting comedy script. But my next project may be a comedy though. (Laughs) I still like the tough wild boar kind of role – like the rude, hulking character in CHUNO.
Q: I find that you have changed a great deal after your military service. This is a good feeling. How do you feel about it?
KS: In the past, I have always been taken care of. But I am on my own now. I know a lot of things that ordinary people don’t know. So I have this desire to re-experience what I have missed. The life of Ko Soo the actor should not be buried and at the same time, there are stuff that Ko Soo the ordinary man should not miss.
Q: So, how’s life for the ordinary man Ko Soo?
KS: I am now trying hard to live well. But I’m still confused occasionally. In this profession, as long as you have imagination, you are OK. Even if you are confused, it is still permitted at an acceptable level. I do not like to draw the line. Although existing in a different world, I will strive to be more adept to changes instantly. (Laughs) Please support me so that I can live a dream life.
Like that moment of silence
Q: You have been a show host before. I feel that the job is not suitable for you as you are a quiet person. Has there been an improvement to your eloquence?
KS: During that time, I did not even want to utter a single word during the 2 hours of the show’s duration. My wisdom and eloquence are inadequate to be a show host. But I later found that the station is a good medium if I want to communicate with people. (Laughs) Actually I like the moment of silence when the dialogue comes to an end and it is all quiet. I like that moment of silence. People are talking incessantly all the time. But it is the awkward silence that does not even make up 1% of interpersonal relationship that is precious. Don’t you think so?
Q: What else do you like?
KS: I like the morning hours, the moment when the sun rises. It always makes us uneasy. However, I am mostly home during that time. I like to think and I like to write stuff freely on paper.
Q: Now that you are taking a break, what do you mostly do?
KS: I’m getting restless. I should be starting on my next project. But isn’t it boring to talk like that? Actually I’d like to go out and have fun. I want to go to Jeju resort, take a leisurely walk around… (Laughs) I download music from the Internet and I have also bought Kim Hyun-chul’s debut album.
