If one were to look for results after a long process, Ko Soo is still a star despite 4 years of absence. And this process involves 10 years of his continuous hard work and endeavours. In the movie “BAEK YA HAENG”, one could feel Ko Soo’s true heart in the intense gaze of Yohan.
Q: Specifically, BAEK YA HAENG is your first movie after your return in 4 years?
KS: I did a stage play after my military service. There’s nothing much to talk about (laughs). But in terms of acting in front the camera, BYH is my comeback movie after 4 years. There’s a difference between a play and a movie. In a play, there’s no camera in between, so it’s a one-to-one performance.
Q: On your first day in front of the camera, which feeling is stronger – shyness or excitement?
KS: Probably shyness. In fact, I had difficulty adapting because the period of absence is not of my choice but due to compulsory military service. During that time, I was dedicating my time to the service. For 2 years, I have not been involved in any performance-related matters. On my first day in front of the camera, I felt strange and nervous as I was there as “a person who once knew how to act”. Even though I was by no means a new actor acting for the first time, it still needs time getting used to the camera following me around in an unfamiliar environment.
Q: Is the play your intention of doing an easy, relaxing job before taking on a movie?
KS: Though stage play and movie are essentially the same, they are dissimilar in terms of performance. Choosing to do the play is not my idea of trying to get my acting bug back before doing a movie. Since the beginning of my acting career, stage work has always been a challenge to me. I was able to do the play because of the right script at the right time. Stage actors have to speak louder in order for the audience in the back row to listen clearly. But choosing to do the play is not a warming-up for a movie. Notwithstanding whether it is a movie or a play, what the audience wants is the same. But there are vast differences between the two in terms of performance.
Q: I heard that the stagnating Korean film industry has once again attained 10 million viewership and BAEK YA HAENG is the most anticipated movie in the second half of this year.
KS: Compared with the most anticipated, it will be better if the film becomes a success. I’ve put in a lot of effort in this film. If the audience likes it, all the better. But because audience’s interests vary greatly, there is still an uncertainty. The movie is the blood and sweat of the entire crew. As an actor, I have a duty and responsibility towards the movie. But I have done my best, so I feel confident. Just like I put in my best effort for the movie, the audience buys a ticket to repay my hard work. So, how can I not do my best for the audience?
Q: Viewpoint as an audience…
KS: A movie does not depend on editing but it also cannot do without editing. I’m curious as to how the film will be edited. But up to the present, I have still not seen it, so I’m not sure. Moreover, no matter how hard I work to complete the movie, I will still be uncertain whether the audience will be attracted to me.
Q: You have received a lot of scripts since coming back. What attracts you to BAEK YA HAENG?
KS: I went on a trip alone and brought some scripts with me. The script that I found most absorbing, meaningful and which I finished the quickest was BAEK YA HAENG. I only learnt that there was an original novel after my return to Seoul when I was talking to a good friend. There is therefore the pressure of knowing the existence of an original novel. And I am not the actor of the TV version. So to the audience, the Yohan that I portray will be the 2nd or maybe the 3rd version. But isn’t a breakthrough an actor’s responsibility? It is because of this that I finally made a decision – I will not read the original novel nor watch the TV version. I will present to the audience my very first impression and feeling of Yohan when I first read the script. Now that filming has completed, I still feel glad that I didn’t read the original work. Humans are a kind of animals with memories. See, had I read the original novel or seen the TV series before filming, I wouldn’t be able to play my own version of Yohan.
Q: So it looks like it is going to be difficult – the original work being the biggest setback?
KS: It’s a matter of what you think. All actors are different. They have their own merits and shortcomings. Though I am not 2nd or even 3rd, I want Yohan’s part to originate from me, Ko Soo, without question but with exclamation marks.
Q: Yohan is a very complicated part?
KS: Firstly, the most basic is to be true to him, then comes working hard. Johan’s inner self is very complex. Compared with the dialogue, there are a lot of emotional scenes. It is simpler if the emotions could be expressed in words. But to express certain feelings is not as easy as one would imagine. For some project, not having a dialogue may be a good thing. But this time, it is not so. I realize how increasingly difficult it is to express with a look instead of using words.
Q: That’s why this movie is highly anticipated by so many people?
KS: After military service, I have a new understanding of acting and choice of roles. My idea of attaining experience through performing has also changed. I am more relaxed now when choosing a script. My values have changed and I begin to look forward to the film that I am currently doing. How’s my acting? I am curious to know…
Q: Ko Soo is a highly focused actor. How do you integrate the role of Yohan during the filming?
KS: During the shooting, I worked hard at absorbing myself into Yohan by slowly getting into the part and then pulling out slowly. I used to choose scripts with a little “Ko Soo-ish” flavour. But now I am able to differentiate between reality and the role I play. How to put it… In the accumulation of experience and time, one must also find a balance.
Q: BAEK YA HAENG is difficult movie to understand. What are the key points?
KS: The way Yohan loves Miho. If Yohan’s situation can be taken into consideration, that will be good. He loves and treasures Miho with all his heart. He lives for her. I really want to know whether the audience can accept the way Yohan loves Miho. Most importantly, there exists people like him who suffer for love in today’s society. Also, our film is not difficult to understand (laughs).
Q: Is there any difference between Yohan’s love and Ko Soo’s?
KS: Fate… Love enables the meeting of two souls from the same body. They are so close. They strive for each other, they struggle, they go further and further. But still, love changes.
Q: If you were to fall in love, who would it be?
KS: It happened a long time ago. I can’t even remember.
Q: When was the last time you fell in love?
KS: Urg... Why are the questions for this interview so detailed? I can’t really remember. This is like an interrogation (laughs).
Q: Your previous movie “SOME” is also a complex movie.
KS: This is not my intention but the matter is such. I do not choose scripts with this in mind. If I read a script and finds it interesting, I will go with the feeling and then make a decision.
Q: There wasn’t an interesting script amongst all the scripts that you read? There weren’t much work that could be compared anyway, during your acting career.
KS: Please do not think that the length of an actor’s career should be proportionate to the number of work he does. You must know that it does not depend on the actor’s decision whether he can take on a role. To an actor, his work is determined after a concrete affirmation by the production company that he is hired. The script selection is the result of many other factors. I hope to be able to read more scripts in the future. I must be clear-headed at all times and careful in expressing myself. But please do not think that I am difficult when choosing work. I am not like that.
Q: Starting afresh after your military service, it is quite surprising that you have chosen a stage play as your comeback.
KS: Like I said just now, I just want to do it. Only a stage play will enable me to perform in front of an audience from a distance of 1 metre away. My every move on stage is being watched by the audience. This is very good. Stage plays get me close to the audience and give me this feeling of a raw performance. Compared to acting in front of a camera, the stage play gives me a different kind of acting experience.
Q: Are you resting now that the shooting has completed? What do you do most during this period?
KS: Yes, I’m resting now. The thing I do most every day is sleep.
Q: What time do you sleep?
KS: Keeping regular hours. I go to bed at 11 pm, latest being 12 midnight to 1 am. I wake up at 6, 7 am in the morning. The timing may change if I’m filming, but most of the time, I keep to this schedule. I will try not to break it as far as possible. Because of work, my life is a bit disorganized. I therefore crave for an organized lifestyle. I remember when I was doing a TV drama in the past, I spent one whole day every week eating and sleeping in the car. It was tough.
Q: What do you think about before you go to sleep?
KS: Formulate a plan. Planning for this and that in my mind. I would think about my schedule for the next day or my next project or my travelling plans, or my future, so on and so forth. Not that I have many ideas, but I just like the feeling of thinking about things.
Q: Apart from plans, what are the things that you normally do?
KS: I have a habit of jotting down my thoughts. I will jot down thoughts and ideas whenever they come to me. I like to do this. I am always carrying a pen and a notebook.
Q: Do you have any intention of publishing these notes?
KS: These are just written casually. Only I will understand these notes. Who will spend money on something they don’t understand? (laughs) I think even if I were to tidy up the notes, it will still not be up to the standard for public viewing.
Q: From the notes, one could actually understand Ko Soo’s thoughts, right?
KS: Quite true. Whenever I think of something, I will jot it down – happy, unhappy, depressed etc. Occasionally I will take it out and read. And I could once again relate to the situation at that time.
Q: Apart from writing, what other things do you like?
KS: I like mountain climbing. Lately I’ve been quite busy, so I couldn’t go as often as I like. But I strive for once a week. I also like to travel – not specifically to look at the mountains and sea, but mostly to drive around without any specific destination in mind.
Q: Is there any place worth visiting or any place that you wish to go?
KS: If it’s our country, I’d like to go everywhere once again. I favour domestic tours. Most places I visited are near Korea. I like to look at the map while lying in bed and plan about where to visit. You can say that I am an expert in this. Whether it is by bicycle, car, bus, train or those one week round trips, or camping in tents – I have done it all. At the same time, I like to travel alone. Not sure when it started, but I begin to feel that the chance (fate) of meeting those people in my travels is priceless.
Q: Travelling freely may be difficult as people do recognize you.
KS: I will avoid popular tourist spots. I love to go to the suburbs to enjoy the tranquility. Because the places I go to are unknown places, no one recognizes me. Do you think the grandpas and grandmas would have an interest to know who I am?
Q: You only bring along books when you travel alone. Do you remember the books that you brought along?
KS: I brought along a lot of books. Can’t remember specifically. Recently, there’s a book I like to read. It’s a book by Haruki Murakami titled “Distant Drum Beat”. I am considering whether to buy the book. I don’t have a particular type of book that I like. It’s just that when I feel like reading a book, I will go and buy one.
Q: It is not possible for people to be happy all the time, especially for actors who go with their emotion. When are you most sensitive?
KS: When I can’t think of what to do. Idling and when everything is at a standstill are undoubtedly the most uncomfortable. Because I am the type who likes to think a lot, I can’t sleep if my mind is blank. I don’t understand why, but when everything is at a standstill, my thoughts are like they are being locked away.
Q: During filming, I noticed that you have a good body. Do you do a lot of exercise?
KS: Actually I don’t have any interest in fitness and bodybuilding exercises. I only exercise depending on how much I eat. If I eat a lot on a particular day, I’ll do more exercise the next day. Though I work out in the gym, do the treadmill and take walks, these are not structured and purposeful exercises. One will tend to be sensitive while filming. In order to co-ordinate with the process of filming, exercise will be irregular. As a result, the body weight will fluctuate erratically. Recently, when I have time to rest, I do proper exercises to stabilize my body weight.
Q: Do you have anything that remained unchanged in the 10 years of your acting career?
KS: It’s difficult to say what has not been changed. But to maintain what has been unchanged is most difficult.
Q: Ko Soo’s image is very sincere and honest. Will you be restricted by this image and feel unhappy?
KS: The “Ko Soo” in my work and the real me should be separated. No doubt the honest image is good, but I don’t want to be shackled by this image.
Q: We can’t seem to find Ko Soo in romantic comedies. Hopefully, there will be a new project after your rest.
KS: Actually I did a romantic comedy previously. It was “MY FAIR LADY”. Of course that project seemed to be quite simple and ordinary on the surface. I hope to have an opportunity to do a romantic comedy in the future. Right now, my next project is not definite, and I don’t know whether there is any interesting project for me to take on. I will now concentrate my efforts on BAEK YA HAENG.

แต่หลีกเลี่ยงไม่ได้ที่จะต้องเป็นทหาร ช่วงนั้นผมก็อุทิศเวลาทั้งหมดรับใช้ชาติ 2ปีครับ ที่ไม่ได้ทำอะไร

นักแสดงแล้ว งานของเขาถูกตัดสินจากบริษัทผู้สร้าง ที่จ้างเขาแสดง การเลือกบท เป็นผล
จากหลายปัจจัย ผมหวังว่าจะมีโอกาสได้อ่านบทมากมายในอนาคต
ผมต้องทำสมองให้ว่างตลอดเวลา และระมัดระวังที่จะพูดถึงตัวเองครับ
แต่ได้โปรด อย่าคิดว่าผมเป็นคนเรื่องมากในการเลือกงาน ผมไม่ได้เป็นแบบนั้น
Q : ใหม่สดออกจากกรม แปลกใจมากที่คุณเลือกละครเวที ?
KOSOO : อย่างที่เพิ่งจะบอก ผมแค่ต้องการจะทำ เพียงละครเวทีเรื่องเดียว สามารถทำให้ผมแสดง
อยู่หน้าคนดู ห่างกันแค่ 1 เมตร ทุกอิริยาบถของผม ถูกคนดูจ้องมองตลอดเวลา ดีมากเลยครับ
ละครเวทีทำให้ผมได้ใกล้ชิดคนดู และรับรู้ความรู้สึกของการแสดงสด
เปรียบเทียบกับการแสดงหน้ากล้อง ละครเวทีให้ประสบการณ์ กับผมอีกแบบหนึ่ง
Q : ตอนนี้ถ่ายเสร็จแล้ว คุณอยู่ในช่วงพักผ่อนใช่ไหม คุณทำอะไรมากที่สุดตอนนี้ ?
KOSOO : ครับ ผมกำลังพักผ่อนอยู่ ที่ทำมากที่สุดทุกวัน คือนอนครับ
Q : คุณนอนเวลาไหน ?
KOSOO : ธรรมดา ผมจะเข้านอนตอน 5 ทุ่ม อย่างช้าก็เที่ยงคืนถึงตีหนึ่ง ผมตื่นประมาณ 6
หรือ 7 โมงเช้า เวลาอาจเปลี่ยนถ้าผมมีถ่ายหนัง แต่ตลอดเวลาผมพยายามรักษา
ตารางเวลาครับ ผมจะพยายามไม่หยุด เท่าที่จะทำได้ เพราะงาน ชิวิตของผม
จึงไม่เป็นระเบียบนิดหน่อย ผมถึงต้องการอย่างมากที่จะทำชิวิตประจำวัน
ให้เป็นเรื่องเป็นราว ผมจำได้ เมื่อก่อนตอนถ่ายละคร ผมใช้เวลา ทั้งวัน
เป็นอาทิตย์ๆ กินและนอนในรถ มันลำบากมากจริงๆ
Q : คุณคิดถึงอะไร ก่อนนอน ?
KOSOO : ก็วางแผน แผนนั่นนี่ที่อยู่ในใจ ผมอาจจะคิดถึงตารางงานของวันพรุ่งนี้ ของโปรเจ็คอันใหม่
หรือแผนการท่องเที่ยว หรือไม่ก็อนาคต ก็คิดไปเรื่อยเปื่อยละครับ ไม่ใช่ว่าผมมีความคิดมากมาย
หรอกครับ แต่ผมชอบความรู้สึก ของความคิด เวลาคิดถึงสิ่งเหล่านั้น
Q :นอกจากวางแผนแล้ว คุณทำอะไรเป็นประจำอีก ?
KOSOO : ผมมีนิสัยชอบจด บันทึก ความคิดของผม ผมจะจดความคิดและไอเดีย ของผมลงสมุดทันที
ที่มับแว่บออกมา ผมมีปากกาและสมุดโน๊ต ติดตัวอยู่ตลอด
Q : คุณตั้งใจที่จะพิมพ์ออกมาเป็นเล่มไหม ?
KOSOO : มันเป็นการเขียนที่ไม่ได้เป็นเรื่องเป็นราวอะไร มีผมคนเดียวที่เข้าใจ โน้ตพวกนี้
ใครจะมาเสียเงิน กับสิ่งที่เขาไม่อาจจะเข้าใจเล่าครับ( หัวเราะ) ผมคิดว่า
ถึงแม้ว่าผมจะปัดฝุ่นจัดการกับข้อเขียนเหล่านี้ ก็ยังไม่ถึงมาตรฐาน ที่จะพิมพ์ให้คนอ่านอยู่ดี
Q : จากโน้ตพวกนั้น อาจจะทำให้คนเข้าใจความคิดของโกซู มากขึ้น จริงไหม?
KOSOO : จริงทีเดียวครับ พอผมนึกถึงอะไรได้ผมจะจดไว้ ความสุข ความทุกข์ ความรู้สึกหดหู่สิ้นหวัง
บางครั้งผมจะเอาออกมาอ่าน และผมจะหวนระลึกถึงเหตุการณ์ ครั้งนั้นได้อีกครั้ง
Q : นอกจากการเขียน คุณชอบทำอะไรอีก?
KOSOO : ผมชอบปีนเขา แต่ช่วงที่ผ่านมาค่อนข้างยุ่ง จึงไปได้ไปบ่อยๆอย่างที่ผมชอบ
แต่ผมพยายามที่จะไปให้ได้ อาทิตย์ละครั้ง ผมชอบเดินทางด้วยครับ ไม่เจาะจงว่าจะเป็นภูเขาหรือทะเล
เกือบทุกครั้งขับไปโดยไม่มีจุดหมายที่แน่นอน อยู่ในใจครับ
Q :มีที่ไหนที่น่าไปเที่ยวหรือที่คุณอยากจะไปไหม?
KOSOO : ถ้าเป็นประเทศของเรา ผมอยากกลับไปที่ที่เคยไปอีกสักครั้ง ผมชอบเที่ยวภายในประเทศ ทั้งหมดที่ไปใกล้ประเทศเกาหลี
ผมชอบอ่านแผนที่ขณะที่นอนบนเตียงแล้ววางแผนว่า ควรจะไปเที่ยวไหน คุณสามารถพูดได้ว่า
ผมเป็นผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านนี้ ไม่ว่าจะเป็น โดยรถจักรยาน รถยนต์ รถบัส รถไฟ เที่ยวไปรอบๆทั้งอาทิตย์
หรือนอนเต๊น แค๊มปิ้ง ผมทำมาหมด ผมชอบเดินทางคนเดียว ไม่แน่ใจว่ามันเริ่มตั้งแต่เมื่อไหร่
แต่ผมเริ่มชอบที่จะได้พบคนหลากหลาย ในระหว่างท่องเที่ยวซึ่งผมรู้สึกว่ามีค่าสำหรับผม
Q: การเดินทางแบบอิสระ อาจไม่ง่าย ถ้ามีคนจำคุณได้?
KOSOO : ผมจะหลีกเลี่ยงจุดที่มีนักท่องเที่ยว ผมชอบไปชนบท เพื่อที่จะดื่มด่ำกับความเงียบสงบ ที่ที่ผมไปคนไม่ค่อยรู้จัก
ไม่มีใครจำผมได้ คุณคิดหรือครับว่า คุณปู่คุณย่าเหล่านั้น จะมาสนใจอยากรู้ว่าผมเป็นใคร ?
Q : คุณคงเอาหนังสือไปอ่านด้วยตอนที่เดินทางคนเดียว จำได้ไหมว่าเป็นหนังสืออะไร ?
KOSOO : ผมเอาหนังสือติดตัวไปหลายเล่มเลยครับ จำไม่ได้แล้วครับ ช่วงนี้ก็มี เล่มหนึ่งที่ผมอยากจะอ่าน
เป็นหนังสือของ Haruki Murakami ชื่อDistant Drum Beat (“ เสียงกลองจากแดนไกล” พี่แปลเอาเอง)
ผมกำลังคิดอยู่ว่าจะซื้อดีไหม ผมไม่มีชนิดที่ชอบเป็นพิเศษ มันแค่ผมรู้สึกอยากอ่าน ผมก็ไปซื้อมาเล่มหนึ่ง
Q: คงเป็นไปไม่ได้ที่คนจะมีความสุขตลอดเวลา โดยเฉพาะนักแสดงที่ต้องมีอารมณ์ หลากหลาย
ตอนไหนที่คุณ อ่อนไหว มากที่สุด?
Q: เมื่อผมคิดไม่ออกว่าควรจะทำอะไรดี ความเกียจคร้าน และเมื่อทุกอย่างหยุดนิ่งอยู่กับที่ ทั้งหมดนี้
ไม่ต้องสงสัยเลยว่า ผมจะรู้สึกไม่สบายใจมากที่สุด เพราะว่าผมเป็นคนประเภทชอบคิดมาก
ผมจะนอนไม่หลับถ้าหัวผมว่างเปล่า ผมก็ไม่เข้าใจว่าทำไม แต่เมื่อทุกอย่างหยุดนิ่ง
ความคิดของผมก็เหมือนถูกขังเอาไว้
Q : ตอนถ่ายหนัง ฉันสังเกตว่า คุณมีรูปร่างทีดี คุณออกกำลังกายมากใช่ไหม ?
Q : ทีจริงผมไม่ได้สนใจ ออกกำลังกายเพื่อเสริมรูปร่างหรือกล้ามเนื้อ ผมเพียงแต่ ออกกำลัง
เท่ากับจำนวนอาหารที่ผมกินเข้าไป วันไหนผมกินเยอะ วันรุ่งขึ้นผมต้องออกกำลังมากกว่าเดิม
ถึงจะออกกำลังใน ยิมหรือเดิน แต่มันไมใช่เพื่อประโยชน์กับทุกอย่าง บางทีอาจจะกระทบกับการถ่ายทำได้
ในระหว่างถ่ายทำการออกกำลังกายจึงไม่ได้ทำสม่ำเสมอ ผลคือน้ำหนักที่ขึ้นๆลงๆไม่แน่นอน
ช่วงนี้มีเวลา ผมจะออกกำลัง เพื่อรักษาน้ำหนัก
Q : คุณยังมีอะไรที่ไม่เคยปลี่ยนในช่วง 10 ปีของอาชีพนักแสดงของคุณ?
KOSOO : พูดลำบากครับว่าอะไรยังไม่เปลี่ยน แต่ที่ยากที่สุด คือการที่จะรักษา ความไม่เปลี่ยนแปลงนั้น
Q: ภาพพจน์ของโกซู คือความซื่อสัตย์มากๆ คุณคิดว่าจะรักษาภาพนี้ตลอดไปไหม ?
KOSOO : โกซู ในงานกับตัวจริงของผม ควรจะแยกกัน ไม่ต้องสงสัยครับว่า ความซื่อสัตย์ เป็นภาพที่ดี
แต่ผมก็ไม่อยากผูกติดกับภาพนี้
Q : เรารู้สึกว่าจะไม่เคยเห็นโกซู ในละครรักเบาสมอง หวังว่าคุณคงจะมีงานใหม่เหลังจากพัก ?
KOSOO : ที่จริงผมเคยเล่นละครตลกมาก่อนเรื่อง MY FAIR LADY”. แน่นอนครับมันเป็นงานที่ธรรมดา
ผมหวังว่าจะมีโอกาส ได้เล่นละครรักโรแมนติค และเบาสมองในอนาคต ผมยังไม่ทราบว่าจะมี
งานน่าสนใจ ให้ผมเล่นหรือเปล่า ช่วงนี้ผมคาดหวังแต่ BAEK YA HAENG เท่านั้นครับ
